Empirically used as an anti-inflammatory and expectorant. It has attracted research after finding it useful like corticosteroids without their side effects. Its immuno-stimulant, hepato-protective, PAF inhibitory, tumour inhibitory, and lipid regulatory activities were subjected to deeper studies. 1 Its active agent glycyrrhizin is a proven thrombin-inhibitor in vivo. 2 Another constituent inhibits growth of prostate cancer 3 ; reduction of body fat by whole plant extract. 4 Antitussive property is recognized by homoeopaths & scientifically proven by many studies.
